Summary
Pillow before 13.0.0, the Python imaging library, has a heap buffer overflow in its FlashPix JPEG tile decoder (CWE-122). Decoded scanlines can be written beyond the allocated tile buffer, corrupting heap memory. An attacker can supply a crafted FlashPix file to an application that opens or thumbnails untrusted input when the optional olefile dependency is installed, which may allow arbitrary code execution. A public exploit is linked in the references.

Description from the CNA
Pillow is a Python imaging library. Prior to 13.0.0, Pillow's FlashPix JPEG-tile decoder can write decoded scanlines beyond the allocated tile buffer. FlashPix (FPX) JPEG decoding selects raw mode LA with two bytes per pixel, while an unrecognized JPEG mode can be decoded as JCS_UNKNOWN with four components, causing ImagingJpegDecode to write four-component scanlines into the two-byte tile buffer. An attacker can supply a crafted OLE2 FlashPix file to an application with the optional olefile dependency installed that opens or thumbnails untrusted input. This can corrupt heap memory and may allow arbitrary code execution. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

Remediation
Upgrade the PyPI package pillow to version 13.0.0, which fixes the flaw. Red Hat fixes python-pillow in RHSA-2026:93077 for Red Hat Enterprise Linux AppStream and CRB (v. 8), and fixes Red Hat Satellite 6.16, 6.17, 6.18 and 6.19 in RHSA-2026:95655, RHSA-2026:95656, RHSA-2026:95657 and RHSA-2026:92861. Red Hat lists Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 as affected without a fix, with plan none_available.
