Summary
CFITSIO through 4.7.0 contains an out-of-bounds write in ffgcls2() in getcols.c (CWE-787). The function trusts heap descriptor lengths for variable-length string columns, so writes overflow a fixed 28,800-byte stack buffer and the caller's string array. A local attacker who supplies a crafted FITS file and gets a user to open it can execute arbitrary code. A public exploit is linked in the references.
