Summary

MongoDB libmongocrypt versions from 1.5.0 before 1.20.5 have an improper validation of integrity check value flaw (CWE-354) in explicit decryption. When the component receives an unrecognized encrypted payload, it returns the bytes unchanged instead of a decryption error. An actor who can modify stored encrypted fields, such as a database writer, a server, or a network intermediary, can make an affected application treat the supplied bytes as decrypted plaintext. CVSS 4.0 rates this MEDIUM (5.3); CISA has not added it to KEV and no exploitation is recorded.

Description from the CNA

The explicit decryption component of MongoDB libmongocrypt can return an unrecognized encrypted payload unchanged instead of returning a decryption error. An actor who can modify stored encrypted fields, such as a database writer, server, or network intermediary, can cause an affected application to process the supplied bytes as decrypted plaintext.
