Summary
CVE-2026-78384 (GHSA-m259-q69p-995q) is an unbounded decompression flaw in CompressionUtils.inflate() in Apache CXF, which decompresses attacker-controlled DEFLATE data with no output-size cap. A small crafted payload can expand to gigabytes on the heap. It is reachable through JWE decryption when zip=DEF, for example JoseSessionTokenProvider with RSA-OAEP key wrap, and through SAML redirect and POST binding token inflation. In both cases decompression happens before or independent of trust validation, and CVSS 3.1 rates it 7.5 (HIGH) under CWE-409.

Description from the CNA
CompressionUtils.inflate() decompressed attacker-controlled DEFLATE data with no output-size cap. A small (~KB) crafted payload could expand to gigabytes on the heap. Reachable via JWE decryption when zip=DEF (e.g. JoseSessionTokenProvider with RSA-OAEP key wrap) and via SAML redirect/POST binding token inflation — in both cases decompression happens before/independent of trust validation. Fix: Added a configurable maximum inflated-size cap (default 10 MiB, org.apache.cxf.compression-max-inflated-size system property) to CompressionUtils.inflate(); aborts with DataFormatException once exceeded. Users are recommended to upgrade to versions 4.2.4 or 4.1.9 or 3.6.13, which fix this issue.

Remediation
Upgrade to Apache CXF 4.2.4, 4.1.9 or 3.6.13, depending on the release line. The affected ranges are 4.2.0 before 4.2.4, 4.0.0 before 4.1.9, and everything before 3.6.13. The fix adds an inflated-size cap, 10 MiB by default, configurable through the org.apache.cxf.compression-max-inflated-size system property. Red Hat fixed Build of Apache Camel 3.33.4.SP3 in RHSA-2026:95622, and has no fix planned or available for several other affected products.
