Summary

Wasmtime from 46.0.0 before 48.0.4 and from 49.0.0 before 49.0.2 has a denial of service flaw in the wasmtime-wasi WASIp3 implementation. An improper check for unusual or exceptional conditions (CWE-754) lets a guest with mutable preopened directory access call set-times or set-times-at with negative seconds timestamps before the epoch, which triggers an assertion failure. The failure aborts the Unix host process.

Description from the CNA

Wasmtime 46.0.0 before 48.0.4 and 49.0.0 before 49.0.2 contains a denial of service vulnerability in the wasmtime-wasi WASIp3 implementation that allows guests to abort the Unix host process. Guests with mutable preopened directory access can call set-times or set-times-at with negative seconds timestamps before the epoch, triggering an assertion failure that crashes the host.

Remediation

Upgrade Wasmtime to version 48.0.4 or 49.0.2. Users on the 46.0.0 line must move to 48.0.4 or later, since 46.0.0 is affected before 48.0.4.
